Essentials For A Newborn Baby

Tuesday, October 13th, 2015

Having a new born can be overwhelming. With so many products available, it’s easy to get confused and purchase unnecessary things. Here is a list of 8 items which you will need for your new baby!

1) Baby clothes

When choosing clothes for a baby look for outfits with full sleeves because infants cannot maintain their body temperature. It is easier to use clothes with buttons on the front then clothes which go over the head. Also stock up on socks, hats, pyjamas, undershirts and a few scratch mittens.

2) Baby blankets

New born infants need to be kept warm. Even babies born in summer will need some light baby blankets. Swaddle blankets are useful in keeping the baby warm and provide the feeling of being tightly held. Baby blankets make it easier to hold a baby therefore keep a few small and light blankets.

3) Car seat/Travel system

The first item you need for a baby is a car seat. Many places will not let you take your baby home from the hospital without a car seat. Car seats and strollers (or buggies/pushcarts/prams) can be sold separately or together as a complete package called a travel system. Many retailers like Toys R Us & Samuel Johnston sell similar kind of top brand travel systems.

4) Diapering

You can buy disposable diapers which are easy to use or use cloth diapers which are better for the environment. Diapers are available for infants and toddlers of various ages, so get the correct sized diapers for your baby. Also be sure to have some baby wipes and diaper rash cream. Diapers and accessories can be purchased in pharmacies such as Boots and Superdrug.

5) Feeding essentials

Breastfeeding is highly recommended for babies, but it’s not always possible for many reasons, so make sure to have formula and a small baby bottle for your new born in case breastfeeding isn’t possible. If breastfeeding works for you then be sure to have some nipple cream which can found in most pharmacies.

If you are bottle feeding then purchase a few bottles and bottle brushes for cleaning.

Bibs and burp cloths are also essential when feeding your baby because many babies spit up. It’s a great idea to stock up on bibs and burp cloths and many famous retailers like Marks and Spencer & Daisy Baby sell these items in bulk.

6) Bathing essentials

Babies have special bath products which are tear free formulas. You should get a baby shampoo and soap beforehand. Stocking up on bathing items is not recommended because your baby might have sensitive skin or skin issues which require specialized medicated shampoo or soap. You will also need a baby bath tub and a baby towel.

7) Sleeping arrangements

When it comes to sleeping, a lot of cultures don’t consider co-sleeping harmful. Co-sleeping makes it very easy to feed and keep an eye on the baby through the night.

If you choose not to co-sleep then you will need a crib (or a cot) for the baby. The crib should be lined with a mattress and a fitted sheet. Don’t put any toys inside the crib because there is a danger of suffocation.

Other options include Moses baskets and hammocks. These work for the first few months, but won’t be used once your baby grows bigger. Cribs, Moses baskets and hammocks can be found at retailers such as:

8) Miscellaneous items

There are other things which you can get after you have your baby such as baby carriers; if your baby always wants to be held, a diaper bag, pacifiers, baby nail clippers (or baby nail scissors), anti-gas medicine such as gripe water, toys such as play mats, baby lotion, oil and powder, baby monitor and lastly a thermometer. All of these items can be found in any of the retailers listed in the previous categories.

These are all the essential items that a new born needs to be happy and healthy.
